ابحث عن معرفة تنفعني
ابحث عن كتابة
تخص هذا العصر ..او تخصني
فلا ارى حولي سوى..
رمل وجاهلية
ارفض ميراث ابي ..
وارفض الثوب الذي البسني
وارفض العلم الذي علمني
وكل ما اورثني
من عقد جنسية
ارفض الف ليلة..
والقمقم العجيب والمارد
والسجادة السحرية..
ارفض سيف الدولة المغرور
والقصائد الذليلة الغبية

I understand the feelings behind this poem of wanting to destroy all the false and useless myths perpetrated in the psyche of the East.
But I cannot agree with the general tone of it, it is another form of extremist "all or nothing" which too has been taught to us and which we must refuse. The poem suffers from one of the defects it claims to want to destroy.
This duality of East versus West, Pious versus Materialistic, Good versus Bad is something that is time to look at more closely and put behind us once and for all.
Instead of wholesale rejection, why not look at each thing independently of where it came from and who is trying to push it?
We don't need a certificate of provenance to look and discuss ideas and concepts, and we certainly don't need authority whether from East or West.
Examining those aspects of life and education that we have been spoon fed (again both from the East AND from the West) and we have also been spoon fed the uncritical acceptance of the traditional views as the absolute wisdom.
I think that this blog has been very good at exposing many of the idiocies of the so-called common sense.
But there are also aspects that were instilled either in the East or West that are precious but they cannot be talked about because of their ineffable nature. They cannot be quantified, they cannot be measured, yet they are essential.
Zak, when Qabbany talks, we can only shut it and listen.
Raouf, great words of wisdom. But I was caught in a moment of blind anger when I posted.
